Darren was born in the beautiful city of Halifax and was raised in the Fairview area, by two hard-working professional parents. His father was a stores clerk for CN; his mother was employed in retail management positions for as long as he can remember. From a very young age, he learned that a strong work ethic and commitment to supporting your family and the community were important, character-defining attributes.
With a love of sports, Darren started playing softball and hockey at the age of 8 and he played through to highschool. His commitment to the values he learned from these games and his passion for both sports, saw him volunteer 13 years to coaching later in life, including hockey teams from Novice to Midget. Looking back, Darren says it was clear he did not have a future career in either sport, but he had a sincere love of the games and it gave him valuable experience about teamwork and discipline, which he believes he still uses in his everyday life. He is a devoted Montreal Canadiens fan to this day, proving further that he remains positive through all adversity.
At the age of 12, Darren got his start in the construction industry, working part-time for Hueston Insulators, as both an insulator and estimator. In his spare time, he was delivering newspapers to the homes in his neighborhood after school and on Saturday mornings. After high school, Darren took a plumbing trade at NSCC. He graduated in 1990, but shortly thereafter came to the realization that there were no solid opportunities for work in this field, so he was on the hunt for his next work experience.
He was approached by his very first employer, with whom he had remained in contact for many years, and took a position working in the grocery retail industry. He worked for 3 years at Foodland in Chester but decided it was time to move on. In 1993, he took a position as a salesclerk and estimator for Beaver Lumber on Chebucto Road in Halifax, which refueled his interest in the construction industry. He went back to NSCC and took Construction Estimating, graduating in 1994. Still unsettled about whether or not he wanted to be self-employed, he decided to open his own business – a retail convenience store. He opened Gateway Newsstand in the Bayers Road Shopping Centre, with the vision of managing his own future. Unfortunately, not long into running the business he saw that there was not a viable opportunity for growth in the given market. He closed the business after three years and moved on.
By now, he knew he had an interest in both construction and in retail, so he took a job as a sales rep with Lumbermart, where he quickly advanced to an Assistant Management position. He was with Lumbermart for 7 years before moving on to Acadia Drywall as Branch Manager and then SSG as the Operations Manager. His interest in a senior management position in sales and construction saw him move on to other positions with Sherwin Williams, Lindsay Construction and GT Painting, where he gained valuable experience in construction estimating, business develop and management.
Darren is now employed with Volcano as a Senior Estimator. Working closely with the other team members he brings a realm of experience in estimating, sales, marketing, business development and relationship building. His visions of the future are in line with those of his teammates and he is confident that Volcano is well positioned for continued growth and success and is looking forward to a long and successful career with his new family.
